We are pleased to invite Alapi’i to Sheraton Keauhou Bay Resort & Spa. The Alapi’i is a 19th century ‘opelu fishing canoe from South Kona which has been restored through a collaboration of community organizations and completed by students of Mr. Wright Bowman. Today, Alapi’i is under the stewardship of the Nakoa Foundation and it has traveled throughout Hawaii Island. Alapi’i continues to serve the community by visiting schools and historic sites, educating and sharing its legacy. The mission for Alapi’i is to help perpetuate the ancient art of ‘opelu fishing and was given by the canoe’s namesake, Mr. George Step. On the bay view coastline of Sheraton Keauhou Bay sits a fishing shrine, Heiau Kanikanika’ula, that was used to bring in tasty ‘opelu to the bay. Next to the heiau is a canoe shed that could have housed a canoe similar to that of Alapi’i. To honor both the land, the bay, and the legacy of Keauhou, we are honored to bring Alapi’i to Keauhou. Visitors, guests and the community are invited to come and "meet" Alapi’i and experience a living piece of Hawai’i history. During the month of February Alapi’i will be at the pool terrace for all to enjoy. Each Friday evening at 5:30 pm during February all are invited to come and learn about Alapi’i and Hawai’i’s people and history.
